BSidesIowa 2019 Opening Remarks

alright alright so we're only like two minutes behind schedule which is awesome so my name is Greg Hetrick I am the president besides Iowa we are a 501c3 registered right here in Iowa our sole purpose is this event okay so I always like to start with a little history so we started in 2013 we had a few off years for for different reasons and our numbers continue to grow which is awesome so this year we had 226 registered despite being on Easter weekend so those of you who are missing family things thank you those of you who are using this you're welcome so because we're 501c3 we like to do a little financial transparency where we're at so we started the year

with just play my bed with a little over thirty six hundred dollars we had ten thousand two hundred fifty dollars and sponsorships which is by far our best year so we really appreciate all our sponsors there's a one that has a booth for sure Rodan and rely equestions supposed to be here but i'm not sure if they're gonna make it they were another table sponsor and I'll go through restos in a minute t-shirts were out 1,900 bucks badges were about 2400 lanyards were another three so you can see all that the dinner last night which is a star was a thousand today's dinner or today's lunch is eight dollars a person so we we just

give them an estimate and then we just pay for everybody that eats last year I think it was just a little over two thousand dollars and that includes the coffee that's out there which they will refill and there's waters out there as well after party that's usually around five hundred bucks we've got a bunch of miscellaneous expenses AV and then we have prices for CTF so right now our current cleared cash balance as of yesterday was about seventy five hundred dollars again all that rolls into next year whatever's left over that'll be probably close to what we started with this year when we're done with it so the events so there is a CTF but tool

is here with a lockpick village it starts at 10 o'clock if you go down the hall towards the CTF room and take a left it's just around the corner as a classroom there they'll be set up at about 10 o'clock for that piece badges Williams here he's gonna give us the lowdown and by the badge itself yes it has Wi-Fi

[Applause] so it's funny I had him you know like send me all the invoices as he was learning parts and the last one was like ten dollars in pennies sorry no no no invoice oh yeah whatever

you tell me that yeah [Music] that's that's why I probably won't work that's from last year anyway CTS being put on by sec TSM they do all the work for the CTF put all the challenges together they run the whole thing for us and all they get in return is me just mentioning them a couple times and so we really appreciate everything they do for us this will be their third year helping us out there down the hall they'll be down there music playing having lots of fun I know they always do a great job so if you're beginner of CTF player they'll help you out it there's usually plenty of stuff for everyone to do so make sure

you check that out and there's tons of like lounge space down there too so you don't have to be in there I want to say special thanks to organizers and I I apologize I might have forgotten some but these are everybody that that I could remember when I was making this last night that's that's helping us out today or help me out in the whole process like John Penn well he's actually lives in Sacramento and he helped me get the shirts all put together and stuff so yeah it was a huge effort and I appreciate everything that they did to help again like I mentioned thank you to our sponsors without our sponsors this would not be possible they helped us pay

for everything everything from the speaker dinner t-shirts badges we do collect a small ticket fee that helps for mostly for folks who you know don't come because we had a big problem the first year where we had a lot register so we ordered a lot of shirts and then people didn't show up so we kind of just do that to kind of put some skin in the game so so we can cover costs that incur the day of the event but all these sponsors have been excellent principal has sponsored every year we've been here and we really appreciate their help along with everybody else so the housekeeping items the restrooms are right down this hall

there's also restrooms down by the CTF room lounges we are free to use all the lounges so you can go here there's I think there's some upstairs but let's try and stay on the main level except for lunch there's lines over here there's lounge spaces down here by the CTF room that we can use all the talks will be recorded a special note deck TSM donated the use of their recording rig for this room and sec IC donated their recording rig for the the other room all the videos will be up on our youtube channel probably with the next couple weeks Wi-Fi passwords that's the the Wi-Fi for this venue so feel free to use it there's

something right above us I think it's the kitchen so they move around it gets a little major Twitter handles that besides Iowa feel free to tweet about it um the last thing I just want to mention here is our code of conduct it's pretty simple it's just kind of be nice to everybody we have no tolerance but thankfully we haven't any problems in the last three years at least they've been reported to me there is an issue please come find me or someone with a green badge and they will find me and we'll take care of it okay lunch till lunch is sponsored by principle they do pay us a little extra to help offset the cost for lunch and so

airliner deck TSM now meets at des moines social club on the second Wednesday of the month and then SEC Midwest and those guys are here somewhere you'll have to remind me which week do you meet Tuesday second Thursday you just moved yours too right yeah second Thursday of the month up at true north a but it changes you always true north in Cedar Rapids though you know you don't have to just come here once the once a year and hang out with a bunch of nerds you can do it all year long again last thing I just really want to thank all our sponsors so if you see them out here stop by I believe they're registering for a prize
