BSidesIA 2017: Closing Remarks

alright we're going to finish this up so I just want to go through a few things things that we learn things that everybody's asked about throughout the day or not everybody about to folks so first things the recordings will be posted in effect I think Evan had already gotten started on that but they might be up there there's a b-sides iowa youtube channel there's when she talks from 2015 up there and then we'll post up there i'll email everybody if you're registered i've got a email address i'll tweet it to fall be CIA and i will post a link on our website along with other talks t-shirts we have like 88 extra took dick big two or three because most

of them don't get me lessons learn so we know this is the first time that I think any of us is really getting on to Congress hey first off six gallons of coffee sounds like a lot it is absolutely not more liquids though and you apologize or we knew and I customer waters and they got burned too fast so we'll work on that for next year and then this is the last one so our attorney said he's probably get invent shirts even though you don't have to so I went ahead and did it because you know what is a great yeah and then locals and profusely good thing we had it for those who missed Knicks yes the Gallagher talk

the first laptop smoked when you plug it in and so they did a field trip outside typically and they smoked the other one yeah well we do know a fire extinction at was really good the other thing I forgot to mention this morning so the SANS Institute and KPMG which Ken Johnson worked for have a scholarship program now as part of the dfi our track for college students and there's the link it's really hard when you use google ken johnson dfi are scarce if it'll show up cool things it's got to deify our classes which are wicked expensive if you've ever seen them stands classes are fantastic but they're kind of spendy the other thing that's

really cool about this there are two instructors that will mentor the person to get accepted responses this scholarship and I believe they're doing it every year the deadline for this year is June first so I know there's a bunch of college students that have registered so make sure you check that out because that's really cool deal that they're doing to get people interested in forensics organizers I wanted to thank everybody that helped organize this is a list I think I got everybody I kind of went direct select channel and just threw out names but I think I got everybody I know there's probably more that worked on the CTF may be exactly that when you get up here but it was it

was really nice having folks to bounce ideas off of help Scout venues you know tell me I'm doing it wrong or tell me that we need to do this instead which was awesome and Brandon had a lot of really good ideas like we got you on coins for the CTF winners and so that was great so appreciate all you guys are so now the volunteers we had so Jessica and Savannah Johnson were running the registration booth mark was in here around in the video and John was in the other room around the video and I Evans on here too he volunteered and he's actually doing all the render videos brought all his gear up here pull

up from from Atlanta last night so we really appreciate those guys in their help they helped set up rental the you know power and everything that we had different places and then I know there's a whole group that did the CTF special thanks to all the speakers without speakers to be pretty boring conference because I can't talk that long so especially like to everybody who came in stuck in town submitted talks it was great i saw bits and pieces of almost every talk and they were all just fantastic so i got a lot of watching to do i just want to get home thanks to the attendees I mention we had 177 registered we in the day 112 show up

those are those are great numbers will keep you know get better will will we're trying to get I think we want to go over 200 maybe three or four hundred as entities we want to give this kind of big we think we can get good draw we had people from gas city where folks is Truman which in Kirksville Missouri we had people from Minnesota I saw we had some folks from Omaha so good a pretty good draw so it's pretty impressive one thing I fir have to thank this morning but we want to thank grandview university they gave us this facility for a pretty low price and that was fantastic and and what they did for

meals did I the meals seemed to work out really really well and it kept me from having to go find a caterer and get food in here which I can I joked at lunch by would have got a caterer for 180 people and then a hundred people over here ever anybody got a doggie bag to go home with them t-shirt and a doggie bag so b-sides I with 2018 I'm definitely ready in for it i'm guessing these guys all right it sounded like there's a lot of fun i'm speaking to so we'll have some dates to follow will probably do it around the same time we want to make sure that we don't squash the the ISU cdc that was

[Applause] use the B team there were 41 challenges for a total of ten thousand nine hundred and fifty points so d team working as an individual kind of interesting game god I took eternity yeah so they have 3950 points so very good well the second place shun an investigator or 1 equals 1 awesome so second place we're going to give a voucher to no starch press for an e-book court empty box so he got second place at 4,900 points evening so I just 10,000 so doing pretty good and then first place was DS nops first place come on up come on up we got new stuff

[Applause] yeah I over this voucher is a good fight so first place so first place we're actually doing a lifetime subscription to 2600 quarterly magazine as well so uh Duke it out let me know later tonight so the way that we're now looks fine however will be upset but there's one so there you go give a round of applause for all these guys thank you so the cpf was quite so this was the first time the SEC DSM had ever worked together to actually put on a CTF and this is something that I think we can all that i can't speak for everyone it says we want to do this again so we look forward to

doing the CTF next year as well as that other conferences as well it was quite a we I think we all underestimated the amount of effort that it would take to put it together there was some categories that did really well so like the SDR category was probably my favorite category right so this is sucking bits over the airwaves and trying to decode what it is they were very there are a lot of challenges still left in that category so we're going to double down on that effort probably next year so get really good at SDR if you want to win this ETF and yeah other than that there's a whole crew of people so

like Tom poll and jake from i assume is up there yeah Nick stars I mean uh Ben Schmidt who's not here anymore and Nate Subaru who got deployed all work together to put this on I feel like I'm forgetting someone else Arlen thank you doing the locks but hey uh that did I don't know a lockpick village I don't see are putting together all that let's get physical stuff that was the last minute thing for him you really took that over I hope you guys all gotta now continue go over there we had how many teams here man way more than what I thought we were 22 total teams of which 15 scored some points and that person
