Show transcript [en]

I just wanted to quickly thank Amanda Becker, Andy Gis Johnson, Annie Howard, Danielle McGuire, Eric Lansbury, John Ziola, and Kat Fitzgerald. So without this great team, we wouldn't have gotten this to happen. Planning all year long, every Wednesday night, 830 to 930. Come join us. Next slide.

And here's all the volunteers. I won't read through all of these, but just take a look. We'll leave this up here for a moment. All these people are all around helping today. Without you, this day would not happen either. So really appreciate that. Jade shirts, green shirts. I can't really tell colors that well, so they tell me what colors I should say. Next slide. The event support team.

Lots of great help here. We've hired several great folks. There's lots of great things happening here from volunteers as well. Just wanted to point out Cut and Run Productions, they're the ones that are making all this AV work, all this sound work. It's so awesome. Thank you very much. They're the ones that are handling the live stream. And this year we brought in an event coordinator, Appleseed Events. You'll see Amanda running around, she really helped us get this stuff happening. Took a bunch of volunteers that we've been doing this and actually showed us up on how to make an event happen. So if you need an event to be run, talk to Amanda, fantastic. Other

folks on here, you'll see a photographer, Dana, running around taking pictures. Feel free to say that if you don't want your picture taken, we'll avoid you. A number of others, and thank you for the Rivers Casino. Who is going to be here for the after party? We have, and if you didn't clap, really think about this. I think you need to stay. We're going to have MC Frontalot. Who's heard of nerdcore hip hop? All right. So you and you and you who heard about it, great, stay. Everybody else, stay and learn what it is. It's awesome. This guy, we flew him in from San Francisco. He does these kinds of things. He's awesome. Please stay and

see him. Next slide. Who's never been to a B-Side Spitzer before? Holy cow. That's awesome. Thanks for coming today. I just wanted to cover a couple other things here. Show of hands, who has job openings at your company? Who's hiring? Oh my goodness, look at this. If you need a job, raise your hand if you're looking for a job unless you're sitting next to your boss, then don't do that.

So there are orange wristbands inside the event center right out here in the front door where you can wear that if you want to advertise. And people who are looking to hire, What's that? We're out of orange bands. The orange ones are gone already? Yeah. Okay. If you're hiring, look for somebody that has an orange band and talk to them. Next slide. So donations, there are some donation jars located at registration. We use some of the donations to help B-Sides Pittsburgh, but more importantly, EFF, Electronic Frontier Foundation, the leading nonprofit defending digital privacy, free speech, and innovation. So any donations that you make today will be used accordingly. Next slide, our sponsors. I just wanted to thank these great generous sponsors, Google, premier

sponsor, and Ethical Intruder, our next level sponsor. And then we have Gigamon, CISO, Forescout, Defy, Sentinel One, Randori, Netscope, Zscaler, Recorded Future, Cyber Crucible, TrustedSec, Akamai, Cadre, Absolute Performance, Black Hills Infosec, Hypercube, Palo Alto, Tele-Tracking, Red Canary, PNC, Geneva College,

NZFTA, Fortress, and CMU. So thank you. Go see all these folks. Some of these folks are here. only because they're hiring. They don't even want to sell you anything, like tele-tracking, for example. They're here because they want you to come work for them. So go talk to them. I'm going to hand it off to Andy. Okay, facility time. Next slide, please. Emergency exits, both sides of the room. Look for the exit signs. If there's an emergency, that's how we leave. Or you could come out the main entrance that you entered the conference space in. Next slide. So we have a code of conduct. It's on our website. It was on the registration when you registered. In short, don't insult people, don't harass people.

If you are being insulted or harassed and you need help, talk to one of us in the blue organizer shirts or you could talk to the casino staff. Either group will be able to help you. If you break the rules, you're going to be removed. Pittsburgh's a small community. Let's respect each other. Let's not get thrown out. How about that? Next slide, please. So related to code of conduct, let's respect each other's distance. There are wristbands related to COVID-19, or maybe you just don't want to be near people. at the entrance. So you could get one of those if you want to flag, hey, I want to be away from people. We have masks for COVID at both

registration tables. If you forgot your mask or your mask gets damaged or, you know, you want more masks. We have plenty of masks. So once again, let's respect each other. Let's make this a good event for everybody. Next slide.

We have restrooms all over the place for all genders. No vaping or smoking in the conference space. Go down and gamble. Well, I don't even know if you could smoke down there anymore. So I should have asked the casino. Yeah, next slide. All right. Hi, everyone. I'm John Ziola. So let's talk about lunch. Everyone's here and you're gonna get hungry at some point today. Woo-hoo, yeah. I've been ready for hours. I've been up since four o'clock. But we're gonna start serving lunch at 11.30. We're gonna be serving it in both sides. So the far side and in this large room where we're standing. That's gonna start at 11.30 and it's gonna be going until about 1.30 or until the food runs

out. If you all are really hungry, the food may run out. And if you don't find food, there are other restaurants in the building. I think that will be okay though. They are going to be boxed lunches. I think there's a salad and two different sandwiches as choices. And there are drink tickets. I believe everyone should have gotten at least one drink ticket. If you would like more drink tickets, feel free to be nice to other people. We reward random acts of kindness. You're also welcome to come participate in the CTF where I have a pocket full of drink tickets to give out for helping other people and just being a good person. We like

to reward that sort of thing around here. But as you do so, please remember to drink responsibly. Next slide, please. All right, like I said, we have a capture the flag event. It is happening in the Ohio room, so pretty much from where I'm standing, if you walk as far in that opposite direction as you can, you will end up in the CTF room. We have a little bit of music out there, so you can probably hear that, and it's right on the other side of the wall from the other track, from track one, I believe. You can register at bsidespgh2022.ctfd.io, but also if you just go to bsidespgh.com slash ctf, there's information there pointing you in the right direction. The casino is

out of scope. Do not hack the casino, please. Please. And we are gonna be giving away prizes for the first, for the top three. And first place is gonna be getting a pretty awesome 3D printer. So pretty excited about that. We'll be giving those prizes out at the end of the day. The end of the CTF is at 3 p.m. So from 3 p.m. to 5, you hang out. We'll figure out who those three winners are and get everything lined up, do a couple pictures, and give you some swag. There's, I believe we'll have coins, a free no-starch book for all of the people that get in the top three, and then for places one and two, they have additional prizes. Next slide, please.

So just a reminder, seriously, please do not mess with the venue. There's no flags here, just jail time. All right, go ahead to the next slide. Oh, this is not the right deck. So, can you just go back one? All right, so there was another slide that we added that didn't get into the right version here, I guess. So accessibility is another thing that we're taking pretty seriously and we're trying to improve every year. We have added live captioning to both sides. So if you are hard of hearing or you have a hard time kind of discerning what's going on at some of these events, you can see we have 70-inch TVs next to each of the presenters on either side that'll be doing live captioning. That'll

also, those captions will be streamed to a YouTube channel, SecPGH. So if you didn't feel comfortable coming in here, obviously you'll probably listening to this afterwards or on the stream and we should have captioning available in there as well on that YouTube channel and then after the event is done we're going to be doing clean up so we've hired a company to clean up the captions and make sure that whatever mistakes are made from voice to text get cleaned up and then we have really high quality captions in the recordings nicely chopped up and post processed as well and stored on youtube.com slash sec pgh All right, next slide. So Eric, if you can come over here. One of the things that

we've done, oh, no, back one. The black badge, there we go. So one of the things that we've been doing for a while now is awarding a great community member, and we have Eric here to present that award.

All right, so I have this very special custom-made black and gold badge with the winner's name inscribed on the back. just making sure I got the right name here. So this person has been contributing to the community in a variety of ways, most notably like through the entire pandemic, he set up a whole bunch of activities for people to do remotely. And then when the pandemic was done, he turned it into a physical meetup that meets once a month and then also has weekly meetups and live streams that go with it. So if you can't guess who it is, this person who won that black and gold badge for 2022 is Justin Forbes. Justin, if you're here, I can't see anything through the lights.

So come find me.

Cool. Well, welcome. I'm Kat Fitzgerald. I am one of the organizers. I worked on the I was gonna say capture the flag, but the CFP. And I wanted to comment about our badges this year. Hold on to your badges because you're gonna be able to reuse these. These are seed packets. So instead of just throwing them in the trash, throw them in the dirt and grow them and watch them grow and who knows what you're gonna get. So it's a pretty cool thing. And all the speakers, please make sure you get your speaker gift that goes along with the badge. One other thing about the talks today, you will notice schedules around the rooms. There's probably some errors on the printed ones.

They were printed and we made some changes on the schedule. So please pull up B-Sides PGH 2022 That is the current schedule, track zero over here, track one all the way down on the other end, and if you're in one of the other rooms right now, you can't see where I'm pointing, but you'll figure it out, track zero and track one. I don't have anything else other than... Let's get this party started, woo!
