Opening Address - BSides Cape Town 2024

thank you for coming to beights 2024 um it's a great privilege to have all of us you here um I hope we can make this year uh just as good or even better than last year um I hope you're all looking forward to the amazing talks uh challenges and all the activities that we have planned for today um so just before starting we're going to go through a few Logistics uh just what what's going to happen today um and some general housekeeping rules and such so just in general um in so for fire evacuation on all of the floors uh you have we have clearly marked fire exits you'll see um on this ground floor

you'll go just behind the venue um that side is also the bathrooms on all the other floors there's bathrooms on every floor just if you go up the stairs on the right side behind you um and then we have a smoking area on the ground floor I think it's if you go up the stairs just on the left side um all of the organizers today as well as the volunteers will be wearing t-shirts so if you there's any uh problems or such just grab a volunteer or an organizer the the organizer uh the organizers have uh like dark blue t-shirts and the volunteers will have light blue t-shirts so that's just an easy way to identify

them um then so you'll all see on the batch that you're wearing uh on the back side of that we conveniently just have a QR code uh for the schedule so it's just going to take you to the pre-t talks website uh to have the schedule for today so if there's any major changes or such we'll update it on there uh so that'll always have the latest schedule for today um during the day we'll have quite a few um confectionaries tea and coffee breaks uh so we we'll have major ones at I think 10:15 between the talks uh we'll have lunch at 12:15 to 1:15 and then we'll have another tea break at at just

10 to 4: um in general there's more than enough food for everyone so please just just don't um be a box as we say uh just dish up for yourself um if you if you're really really hungry just dish up like a normal person and then wait a half an hour or such and then you can come back and if there's more you can dish up some more um and then yeah there'll also be even more food at the after party as well uh so we have a few challenges running uh the capture the flag is one of them uh if you haven't already signed up for that it's probably too late uh but you can still have fun regardless uh

we'll have the prize giving uh at the at the ending ceremony uh the CF itself closes at 12 uh but if you can still participate today uh if you want I'm sure there's some fun challenges that you will be able to finish even though your chance of winning is fairly small we also have a scavenger hunt uh we did this last year it was very successful so we're running it again this year um and we added some a few more things so this year we have the QR codes in addition to the NFC tags uh there's a QR code there that you can scan as just an example so it's not going to give you any points it might

give you something else but uh yeah it's not going to be points um you can sign up at the scavenger hunt website uh so over yeah so in general there's going to be C codes throughout the venue I don't think there's any outside the venue most of them will be outside or I don't think we have any within the chalk venues themselves as to not disturb the speakers they'll all be in a reachable Range so you don't have to like climb on something or climb on someone in general so we have the QR codes and then this year we also have NFC tags some of them will also be with people so maybe a speak or such we have

different challenges they'll have hints as to where you can find the tags um one thing to note is they are onetime use the NFC tag so the first person to get that tag gets the points and after that it's void so no one else gets the same points there's 10 of the tags that have special prizes connected to them so just by scanning that one tag you can win a prize and then next uh we have the return of the vending machine um maybe not in the in in the for in the same Glory that we had it last year it was a bit minified so we can actually you know put it on a plane um last year it was a

few tons and not really practical to move around uh but it's uh but it's back uh thanks really thanks to to Rogen um so head upstairs I believe it's on the Terrace uh and you can have some fun without and win some cool prizes then um Goose has another AI challenge again this year um it is opening from 10:30 this morning and it'll run until 400 p.m. uh the password is on screen but I'm sure you can bug him again after this to get the password the password is just AI challenge I do believe you'll have to register on try hackme to be able to submit the uh the the the challenge um the the the flags

for thanks uh there's 11 Flags or 10 depending on who you ask um and yeah it's like all the other uh gandal AI challenges except it's apparently harder so have fun with that then this year we have some amazing CTF prizes sponsored by Al security and offensive security uh of yeah both sorry uh we have I think two uh course bundles from offsec uh the 200 and 300 level courses as well as one security 100 course we have three CRPS and three ccps or if you've already done them the c t these are these acronyms are getting worse um and then we also have some Hardway prizes this year I believe we have a few Raspberry Pi 5

some Pi zeros we have AO Uno kits we have a bunch of lockpick kits uh some South ORS uh Spyro sets the cedo sets we have a lot of prizes this year uh then we also have I think like 70 posters um up for grabs and then some other small miscellaneous prizes like I think pentest pentest Academy vouchers there's a lot of things to be won this year oh and then there's also chips I heard I'm not sure who wants to win chips but uh yeah so uh we have a very great schedule again this year uh it's running across two tracks the first track will be here on the um subround floor and then the

other track will be on uh floor one so it's not the ground floor it's one above there the sponsors will mainly be on the ground floor and then up top we have the Terrace where there's also going to be coffee available in general uh when in the venues trying not to interrupt the speaker so if you come late to the talk um just try to be quiet and sit at the back preferably and we ask that you don't interrupt the speakers during the talk and just keep your questions for in the end preferably then um we want to uh say a really big thanks again to obscure for being our Platinum sponsor this year um

good morning everyone how's it going welcome uh to bides 2024 go a so um it's it's quite nice looking everywhere and uh we got the Obscure logo on the bunch of shirts and and um it just looks good uh as a whole again you know standing here in front of you guys I think taking it back where this all started I did a bit of research I think it's 2011 correct me if I'm wrong where Cape Town bside started and um looking where we at today with a full room not everyone could even fit in here we still have to send people upstairs as well I mean just give a round of applause to the whole bides

team uh interesting this is the first it conference where I've been where someone said please guys don't eat that much so usually it's like you don't have to tell people to do that hey so I don't know what's going on here in cap town so maybe it's bulking season you know anyway again you know just to every single person you know that's been involved to get this amazing day together thank you so much you know Charles and the team uh all the sponsors it is insane the amount of effort it takes to put something together like this and without all the sponsors it's literally impossible you can't make up something like this with only ticket
