Day Two Welcome and Opening Remarks

hello hello hello welcome back to day two and the last day of security b-side san francisco 2022. [Music] [Applause] once again we're so very excited that you are here today um so very excited that you're here back in person is the main thing um virtual is just not the same thing tired of standing in front of zoom all day so i have another full day of events today so make sure you grab some breakfast i love pancakes and there's great eggs too so make sure you enjoy that um again our theme this year is from the ground up uh this is kind of a year of resetting things we want to return to the basics

you know so specifically security b sites core tenants are community collaboration and education so we really want to focus on those kind of key things um as we close out the last day of the event this event is and will always be centered on community so just super excited that we can once again bring this community back together in person again it's a rebuilding year so please be patient with us some things are not working as as great as they are um we are a 100 volunteer organized team and the last two years have been very brutal to all of us um so we really appreciate uh all the leeway there but yeah we we do this because

it's it's the event is put on by and for the community there's about 25 staffers that work about year round to put this on we have an amazing um call for a call for papers committee team that also reviews all the submissions and our capture the flag team spends a lot of time rebuilding the uh all the challenges every year so they're fresh every single year plus a large number of volunteers that we would not be able to make this event happen without them so there are three different floors of different things going on we have this is city view on the fourth floor we also have mezzanine level where we did registration and then also on the third floor is amc

where most of the talks will be to say besides here in embarcadero [Music] but yeah so there's a lot of cool stuff going on if you make sure that you check you walk around explore and check the schedule as well you know check the schedule you can read on sked or on hacker tracker there also was a copy included in your program as well um so i want to call out a few specific things um we'll have lunch again the same place sponsor raffle will be at 12 30 um in the participant hall uh again it says have summer so we don't know what the weather like as you've seen this morning yesterday was nice

today it's raining so if it does clear up we'll put the uh the stuff outside and everything else but obviously you're welcome to be outside um it just you know it's san francisco uh is what it is um but uh we're very happy to have the outdoor space so please use it if the weather um is agreeable uh again capture flag is over here on the other side uh there so make sure you participate in that there's some really cool stuff going on really great challenges so if you haven't even do that if you've like never tried to do it there's challenges of all levels so please go and and check that out it's really fun

and enjoyable speed mentoring is happening again from 11 to 3 today it is being done virtual so you just go on slack on the besides of slack which is accessible from our website into the speed mentoring channel there's a bot workflow thing that you can go through and sign up for there and you'll be matched with somebody again we'll have closing ceremony tonight at 5 30 here in this room and i just want a reminder that the outdoor patio is non-smoking only go all the way down to the ground if you need smoke and that includes vaping as well oh and the other thing i wanted to mention is that the hardware village is open today

so in the villages area i've i wasn't able to get it open yesterday but it is open today so make sure you check out the hardware village again for q a we're using slido hashtag besides sf 2022. pretty simple um and then we we need your feedback we want to know what went well what didn't go so well we read through every single piece of feedback that you give us so please go to besides sf.org feedback for just general feedback and then also on the schedule itself on sked you can individually go at the at the bottom of every single entry there's a place to provide feedback again we read through every single one of those

so please provide all the feedback you can because it definitely helps us for planning for future years and again as i mentioned yesterday we need help this is the last two years have been very trying it's been on everybody including the organizer team we've had several of our staff that actually just moved outside the sf bay area in fact two of our staffers are actually flew in that they moved away during the event and then flew back just to help us out this weekend so we really need help you don't have to be local to the bay area but it is a can be a large time commitment but we really do need some help so if

you think that you can help out we have an interest form at besides sf.org jobs it was not working yesterday but it's fixed today so please go there and submit your interest and we'll get in touch with you after the event just a reminder that we do have a code of conduct that you agree to when you're registered it's that show respect and tolerance for each other's uniqueness be kind and practice the golden rule simply put do not be an ass or kick your ass out so again absolutely zero tolerance for physical verbal or sexual harassment intimidation or marginalization of any human or robot i guess as well but if you have an issue or witness uh

any of behavior that's not consistent with this policy uh let any of the radioed staff know about it or any of our safety ops volunteers and we'll get it addressed promptly for the full code of conduct you can check your program or online uh so obviously covet's been on our minds um so uh you know as you've seen we are requiring vaccinations and masks we just asked that like hey i know masks are really annoying believe me i i get it but we do ask that you wear them at all times unless you are actively eating or drinking or you're actually presenting um and then again this is inside inside does include the tint just

to be uh specific on that so outside hopefully the weather is okay but outside as long as you're on the patio outside the tent you can take your mask off again if you start to feel sick at any point please just go home you know we we record all the talks they will be on youtube in a couple of weeks so you're not going to miss anything there so again if you start to feel sick sick go home we have tons of hand sanitizations all around the venue please avail yourself but most importantly wash your hands with soap please thank you there's so we have a video and photo policy this is unique to you know our conference and a couple

other conferences as well and the policy is pretty simple it's just that you need permission of all the people in the frame that you're taking um before you take any kind of photo or video or any kind of other media form so uh if for some reason you actually you mistakenly take one or something and somebody asks you to remove themselves just please do that um we want to make sure that we are respecting everybody's personal preferences so thank you for that we do have one exception for this we have a official photographer yep there she is um so she is helping to capture the magic that is b-sides hopefully get some of these photos on

the website we've already been posting some stuff on twitter as well but if for some reason you don't want to if she if she's taking a photo and you don't want to be in it just let her know she's really awesome just ask her she's happy to help awesome cool as one thing that we love to do is give back to charities as well even though we ourselves are charity too but our merchandise net sales proceeds go to three different charities every year this year we've had we're partnering with copath.org eff and women in security and privacy so as you purchase something from coatcheck later today you have the opportunity to take a token and
