okay I'm going to get rolling so we can keep on schedule thanks everyone for coming out really appreciate it welcome to the bsides Red Rocks event um you know for everyone here I I consider you a participant right there's no you know passive attendees it's us all interacting and building the community um to that end if you are interested there's some comments going on in this Discord Channel you can join it by the website the join Discord link um so if you get questions especially about the CTF I definitely join the discort and go to the CTF Channel or like lead over the CTF is watching that questions and whatnot um just as way of introduction

I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with the bites format but BS sites is really a Comm Community Driven event um it's done for and by information security community members and the goal is really to expand the spectrum of conversations that are happening you know beyond what you typically get in like a you know your workplace or your um you know your studies right and one great part about the events is it creates opportunities uh both in our careers as well as in US connecting with one another and sharing knowledge and really you know we love discussions I've seen everyone interacting this morning I think it's been awesome we love demos and really getting Hands-On um solidifying our

skills and then you know talking about what's next in the industry like what are the trends that we're going to be seeing in 2024 do we feel like you know these things are going to be critical to our Security Programs or you know how you know specifically we're kind of at a Tipping Point now with generative AI how is that going to affect each one of us in the in the it and cyber security space so you know those are those are conversations that we all should be having I just really want to say thank you there's a lot of people who put a lot of hours into this event uh some of them that are on the

working group are listed on this slide here um but you know Margie Claire Bobby Shelby Jesse Jim Trey Chris Marv Greg and others have they've put a lot of effort into these events and that's that's not including you know the the speakers and the workshops right so that they've put a lot of effort into so appreciate that just by way of announcement this is a nonprofit uh run organization uh so we're at 501c3 and if you want more info about that um you know you can check out the website but we just basically run bides events in Utah that's kind of our our Focus right now um I'm Bryce Coons if you don't know me um I uh I've been in the cyber

security space for a while um I kind of started my career at Homeland and I was more on the defensive side really um hunting down nation states and removing them from homelands unclassified networks and then I went up to the NSA and I was over an offensive unit where we did a lot of red teaming to um find data about APS uh so you know really offensive is more my um my focus uh my passion I guess that's what to say it uh I built a red team for Adobe when I moved to the Utah area and then a number of years later I started stage two security which has been uh rebranded as ultraviolet now uh where we do a lot of

like cyber security services both on the offensive and defensive side um I kind of lead the offensive Services there so that's kind of me and a nutshell um I'm not going to speak too much more yeah okay so we got a ton of great workshops contents contests and more um I just wanted to make you aware Jay Stevenson's uh he's doing an intro to malware so if you want to learn about malware and how to analyze it I definitely recommend you check that out um that's going to be over here to our to my right um we also after in the afternoon we're going to have a resume review Workshop so if you're a college student or if you are

you know looking uh for work or you know you just want to get your resume polished up Brandon Benson's going to be leading this and helping uh review resumés and give tips Brandon does a lot of hiring uh he was you know recently over a large stock and now is over a large security engineering team so um he knows what you know employers are really looking for in these resumés uh Mike Weaver is running a red team Community this is going to be awesome even if you don't know anything about red team I highly encourage you to check it out he has a very like gradual a system to step you up very gradually um and Mike's awesome guy so he'll you

know him and the people in there will be super friendly and help you learn if even if you don't have any hands-on experience and then this afternoon in this room to the left Clipper and copy kid Mike um are going to do home Labs uh if you're interested in like getting more into like hooking technology uh setting it up at your house or doing any type of iot um you know definitely come talk to them they they are really passionate in that area and they're going to be talking a lot about how you can establish kind of like a three tier DMZ what that means and how to do that uh you know for the cheap or free at

your house and yeah just generally you know those guys always got great ideas so if you want to know more about how to do projects at your home definitely stop by there this afternoon there is a CTF contest it is um referenced on the website um if you want help I recommend you go to the Discord channel the CTF Discord Channel there are prizes for individuals who take first second and third place and there is prizes for like a top team um which is five $25 Apple gift cards um so you got to be physically present at closing ceremonies to be awarded those um and it opened at 9:30 and it closes at 300 p.m. 3:30 is

the closing ceremonies so um and that's so we have time to figure out who the winners are and all that just uh the venue is we really appreciate uh the Utah Tech campus having us out here and they you know they're very helpful in us getting set up so really appreciate that and the layout's really simple uh over here we've got the red team community and home lab and over here we're going to have the malware in the morning and then the reses in the afternoon so this is the main track where all the speaking is going to be happening you could see all the sessions on the website um but you know we've got

a great session coming up by Jesse Harris on you know a vulnerability Management Programs uh we got zodiac talking about how to do fun tabletop exercises which is something every organization should be doing we got Brandon talking about uh cool things he's found on showan you know like people's camera systems and stuff like that um so he's got an awesome talk there um you know we got uh Kanan talking about pki and how to how to implement that correctly in your Enterprise we're going to have a short break around 1:30 for a half an hour the shop back here is open for sodas and snacks and if you hang to the right down this hallway there is more food options

um so just a short 30 minute break and then at 2 p.m. Anthony who teaches a class at at black hat on hacking into Cloud environments is going to talk about some Azure security Concepts um and then we're going to have Josh boils he's going to talk a lot about uh um you know how um how to implement a better security program and then um you know we got Tyler who's going to talk about how you can hack retro gaming consoles to like restore them back to their Prime uh which I I've checked out a few of these people's talks and they're pretty awesome so um so definitely check those out stick around throughout the day have

some conversations as far as comms go the schedule is on the website that's besides redrocks with an sn.org um the website was coded by Claire U so she's a high school student so I appreciate her doing that so um the um then we got the Discord if you have any questions we'll be monitoring that throughout the day as well as I just wanted to do a plug uh there was recently a Discord created for just all it people kind of in the southern Utah area um so I put a link there to that um and if you have uh more questions about that I think you can talk to Jesse Harris about it so okay so in

conclusion um what what is bsides all about it's about building connections that's what we're here to do we're here to talk to each other build connections strengthen the community right it's about the community right not only strengthening the people who are in it but getting more people into the community making everyone feel welcome um yeah you know being as inclusive as possible right and it's about careers right a side effect of us having a good community and having good conversations is we're going to be able to help each other out throughout our careers whether that's like advice should I you know look for other job opportunities you know what does the market look like where should I go next what things

should I study um you know helping people get into the industry or helping people move up in the industry um so once again there's the Discord if you if you need any help um or you know you can always talk at the regge table too um but yeah I just you know I just want to welcome you to the event um I'm Bryce Coons I'm the president of the nonprofit that kind of runs the events uh you know Ryan and Kiren and I know ost's not with us and Tyler um you know they've put countless hours into this so really appreciate and the working group I really appreciate everything that they've all done so um

thanks so we'll have uh Jesse come up next and do the next section section and uh appreciate you all coming out thanks
