I'm a second year cyber security student at the University of Warwick yeah uh yeah president of cyber women branching for commentary hi I'm Sarah the vice president of Psy women at Warwick security Journey began when I was doing website development for some competitions back in secondary school and I implemented some security features and I thought well that is actually a very interesting concept I find it interesting security when I joined the Cyber Discovery program while I was doing my computer science GCSE this was a program set up with UK government to encourage Executive Village children to learn about cyber security my journey into cyber security started with a love of forensic science and exactly how technology can play a really crucial part in a criminal investigation it was about 15 and I started going to plenty of summer camps and opportunities in my area to sort of upskill inside security and that's how I ended up doing a more technical role [Music] of the composter syndrome is a big difficulty that I've had to face throughout my time in cyber already and but I think putting myself out there um a lot more and being invested and included in a lot of different communities and events for example with so women at work being a big one of those I found that there wasn't enough support for women like or sport really in general lots of stuff was really Niche do they sell the iPad since starting my cyber security journey is having to adjust to a very male dominated field this is because I spent the encouragement of my education prior to University in an all-girls school so I'm happy to learn how to adjust to a very much more mixed and much more mail than this environments I find that a lot of the times people do underestimate me I think a lot of people think that just because I'm a woman I often won't be as good at this technical side of cyber security as some of my male counterparts I hope that I'm currently proving that that's not true and I really want to face up to a lot of the people who have said that to me in the past at this stage in my career my main interest is investing with a special focus on websites I find quite a pleasure in trying to break things and seeing if I can succeed thing that excites me most about cyber security is how it's always changing and how every day is a new challenge I think the community that we have created already and is something that's really exciting in cyber security and it's really really exciting to be a part of something that's actually making a difference I think quite excites me the most in cyber security is to be able to understand how those cyber attacks work and there's opportunities there's so much to learn there are so many paths to take and it's just with an appetite for learning you never get full be afraid to learn something new it's okay to get something wrong and it's okay to try again take the help from people around you and we can encourage each other and support each other to learn new techniques some piece of advice I would give is to take every opportunity that comes to you cyber security is such a broad subject so I think it's really important to try everything one lesson I would certainly highlight is that you do not have to be a technical expert to be part of the cyber security world and that the soft skills are just as important as the technical skills ever will be explore everything get to know the different areas and just focus on enjoying learning
