my name is amber and I a computer scientist but I'm going to be speaking about ketogenic diets which is

I'm writing about it site for help and the URL is ketonic

so we've writing about this in different studying but I've never spoken

I was reluctant to put ketogenic diet a title I didn't of word diet which I think has bad connotations because for the most part if you're talking about a diet typing weak medical if you have an allergy or intolerance can't process because you have mutation a dietary therapy in which you avoid that food very strong affection but in general diets although they might they're not medical grade therapist came up to you and said I have this dietary therapy [Music] if you follow it you're going to be able to stop taking your prescription drugs for some serious medical problem like where it's going to cure or prevent the major progressive term or cancer you should probably be very

skeptical and expect that you're being preyed on because you're vulnerable but the ketogenic diet is the major exception to that it's an outlier and I wanted to explain why it's different some great properties of it that I can one of the reasons that we know ketogenic diet is really powerful there is a major disease epilepsy for which it is standard clinical practice now to give energetic diet were treated at least Sukhram is a lot about

okay in brief if if if you have two or more seizures for some unexplained reason like it's not because you got hit on the head then that's that then you'll be classified as having and a neurologist would want to start trying to treat you as soon as possible because there's this thing called inflating which is that if you have seizures that seems to make you more vulnerable to having more seizures and at recent some people and so they try to control seizures as soon as they can prevent them from getting worse and so this usually starts at children rather than starting the results and so they start trying an anti-epileptic drugs on central children my plan and at

about two-thirds of people who have this problem the anti epileptic drugs will be successful enough and controlling the seizures that it will be considered like a sustainable treatment in some cases it will be completely cured by a net to help London trip and then like the people will just free of seizure be for the rest of their lives but in about a third of people which is a lot there's like a million people united states who are in that lucky third that the drugs don't help or don't help enough or the side effects of the drugs are too bad to tolerate and so they're stuck with potentially crippling life-threatening potentially progressive disease called epilepsy and no treatment

except it turns out that this to Jenny diet is freak treatment and this is a standard practice now that I think any neurologist would agree that you should try to keep your drink diet if you're one of those unlucky are not saved from epilepsy buy the products and many many clinical trials and experiments it's been shown that about everybody know the numbers better than you in about half of the people who try it be try the doc you try the Keogh diet it reduces the seizures well enough that this is considered successful treatment keep doing it and in something like 16 or one-third of the people who get fit on this diet it completely gives

their seizures so it is something profound to their rings which causes them to completely stop having yes but I would like you to explain what hmm so a ketogenic diet is just a very very low card with that so the standard diet that most American adults eat is really high car most people probably more than 300 grams per day of carbohydrate and if you're if you try a low carb diet like atkins style to lose weight people who do that typically take some target number of grams per day 150 or 25 or something and they try to eat only enough carbohydrate to stay below that limit now if you put that limit down low enough then your body switches from my

glucose burning metabolism to a fat-burning metabolism and what that threshold is to make that metabolic switch it differs from person to person but if you if you hit that threshold and you stay in the fat-burning metabolism day after day and that's called a ketogenic diet that's what they're using to treat those up might be total and by the way in my experience the most successful way to practice this it's like a do-it-yourself experiment on yourself and in my experience the most successful way to do it is to just aim for zero like attempt to eat no carbohydr with all day after day and if you might make an exception on occasion or accidentally a few grams

of carbohydrate you're still way lower than the threshold for you that's right it's not just a little carbohydrate it's high fat oh yeah right little car by fat okay so we know we don't quite a lot about what you need any guides can do regarding we don't necessarily understand exactly how works there are different menus you know about and they're different curious about it's a big research area but the things that when I'm doing scientific research like what I really care about is the empirical results because a plausible mechanism story can be turned around by one experiment what never gets taken away the results that happen that's what I care about the most there are a lot of really important

results about community was profound things that we know are effects on brain so for example we know is a powerful Bureau fact so for example well there aren't a lot of trials where scientists have taken variety of humans and put them in under different conditions and then try to damage the brain check to see which ones survived but they have done back leg thing with Road studies they've seen again and again if you take a bunch of animals and put some of them on a ketogenic diet do stroke or induce brain trauma or even nerve gas animals that were on the ketogenic diet have are profoundly perfectly protected from it's a very significant

but because you switched your metabolism to fat and battery new study main gun goes that means if you have changed things at the very local cell on the contrary word and so it not only has its local effects but has these peripheral effects of your body another area that I think is really important to use in heart disease and die which are two of those

symptoms of those diseases are reduced by k2 Jenna fat so for example if you have high triglycerides a ketogenic diet were drastically lower if you have low HDL which is the eugenic diet and raise that if you have insulin resistance of your insolence if you have obesity which is my community symptom it will drastically so I think that's really those are areas where we have there is also preliminary evidence that ketogenic diets are going to therapeutically helpful in many other areas for example those ones that I mentioned at the beginning bipolar disorder and other metals and Alzheimer's and cancer most of the cancer evidence right now is spring not surprising but also there's good reason to believe that

so it's very exciting and just on a personal note want to tell a few years ago I was struggling with my polar disorder it was extremely debilitating it's been four years that I've been completely off drugs I want a very start to diamond I it's not clear exactly how much of the treatment comes the ketogenic aspect but it definitely is a ketogenic there are other lines of evidence that showed that should be happy effect it has some commonalities with epilepsy in fact and many of the the modern drugs that are used to treat bipolar are actually original dress so

the other really important thing about you Johnny diets is that or something you can do yourself they're safe and I'll require a prescription you know no supervision i should say if you have a disease taking a drug or something that acute in a guide is Oh like you have diabetes high blood pressure it may be the case that your diet ketogenic diet will affect that help it so quickly that drivers though in that case you might like but for the most part it's easy there are certainly pitfalls that people they try a community guide the main not counting properly not realizing and I was eating a lot of it because I thought it was like high protein

basically with a few easy tools measuring is not hard it's safe it's rare to find something that's safe and that the benefits the potential benefits are really high and there are also very likely to turn out to be true benefits portage that

I knew result thank you so much for having courage to share that because by boulders like cut the statement thank you so much so

editor but I I do think that there are some reasons for being a vegetarian I empathize with but there are also a lot of reasons for being a vegetarian that turn out to be and so if you're being a vegetarian because you think that that's bad for you or you think that saturated fat is that for the animal protein is that I strongly encourage you to we think that an event let me

but if there are other reasons or you're just simply not a vegetarian construct a diet that makes a lot products way or other protein and fat especially as the most important part fat too we do that to get the

I'm crystal I prefer ruminants like so we've but I also eat fish work taking a turkey and Soviet eat really see yes he drinks coffee is my plan by his history but

thats all use me yes that's literally all I I ought to do i love you about cheese I serve some juice do i do what no beans are actually hi car so I when you go and get your physical over here every six months blood in urine you never dr. freaked out just the Kia tells he's like oh you've got you got fatty liver kidney probably not cross this in crunching properly well the only time that I've encountered that problem is when I was pregnant because they use ketones as a sort of proxy for measuring dehydration so they routinely measure ketones if you have but I'm very lucky in my life but because of my doctor in

the transformation people and my lipid profile is actually let's not get too technical but like what's the salinity or what your pH curiosity is it sitting or under stock like so blood pH is always very tightly regulated that my urine pH is probably more cities and your salinity is still like 24 it's just various so I've seen some studies back at some higher brain function there's large amounts

Justin and those functions committed by burning did you say higher brain function yes umpire any personal I mean you're not gonna catch me doing like derivative capital something like that but you know some i don't know if i call it creates 18 but yeah heroic god currently just higher brain function whatever you want to quantify that as is burns large amounts of glucose under certain circumstances under under stress over that so soldier being making the command decisions under fire turn through the coast and how see is there any studies done on it or anything that suggested that it's acceptable under this diet have any adverse effects okay so there there's something that's brought up a lot and that's that the

brain does have that it means all the time when you're on a ketogenic diet one of the things that happens much of your brain function about seventy percent I think starts being operating by using ketones instead of groups so so I'm not sure how much if you were to do a measurement of like tens framework if that gets taken out by the ketones or if it goes luxe also goes maybe it's a combination but you don't need to eat the glucose to get the because all the time you're really kick in the liver is transforming the coast at a rate that matches your needs matching your blood glucose level to keep it in that range that needs to be

by converting protein in the liver to and it stores it in form of glycogen and kicks it out just the right a lot of people find that cute in a diet their energy levels and their boots and they're thinking become a lot more even float because instead of having this typical thing where you eat some glucose your blood sugar goes way up into your deal with that by flooding within if you'll tire and you can't be very well you never get that anymore because okay just keep it steady that's a really positive effect I have one friend who has started a ketogenic diet maybe kind of problem resolved he was just really excited about decide to try it and that's that's the

thing he has said to my really need to focus has just become really there are studies on cognitive decline showing that a ketogenic diet that's more about fixing a problem

it's called cute otic done work we'd like to thank risk I hope for sponsoring besides today and allowing these talks to happen
