[Music] so good morning everybody uh sorry for the delay the long delay in starting um we used hop-in for b-sides edmonton and for some reason it worked flawlessly for me i had no issues whatsoever i didn't change anything except maybe i haven't rebooted since then i have this weird obsession with trying to see how long up time i can keep on my pc and maybe that's a bad idea i don't know anyways uh we're up and running now after a full reboot and a couple of windows updates because you know those are important too so thank you very much uh for coming in um i just wanted to give a quick overview um i know we've allotted quite
a bit of time for this session certainly more time than i have information for in terms of this slide deck but i'm open to stick around and and questions and anything that anybody might want to chat about so i'll just start off with introducing who ise squared is and then i'll get into some of the interesting and fun things that we're doing here so ise squared is an international nonprofit organization with more than 140 000 certified members our focus is to connect educate and inspire both upcoming and current professionals in the industry as well as the general population in terms of the communities or that we live in and interact with on a daily basis
giving them sort of the knowledge that we have you can imagine um where we live and breathe this stuff all day long of course we have a lot of very interesting and useful insights and some of the talks that have been going on in uh yesterday i watched um even to me are just mind-blowing uh some of the stuff that people are are doing some of the the hacking and some of the the deep dives into some of the apps that are misbehaving on the phones it's just incredible um and so we have all of this information for most people um especially the people that i deal with on a daily basis this is completely
foreign to them i might as well be doing brain surgery here uh rocket surgery is my favorite term uh for these kinds of things uh it it they don't they don't get it so um i i feel like it's our goal and our mission to not only help uh the professionals that are that are working in the field uh to to work with them and and you know help each other out but also to inspire and help educate the community at large with that obviously ise square has a number of certifications um ranging from sort of the the starting point for most people which is the cissp which is your your overarching general security um certification that
is basically does uh all of the various everything from physical to network security application design best practices basically everything and then from there you can branch off into health care cloud specific there's all kinds of specific courses that you can take and and certifications that you can get that just get even deeper into each one of those categories for isc 2 alberta specifically we are a chapter of the larger isc group we represent all of alberta so as i mentioned before and i'll get into it a little bit earlier you know we just recently had uh b-sides edmonton which was which was amazing and we're currently helping out right now with besides calgary um there's other events
that we have done in the past and um would like to get up and and do those again uh kobet obviously being a bit of an issue for some of those things they certainly make them a little bit more challenging but for for us specifically here in alberta um we are a microcosm of the larger isc alberta we are here to help inspire and educate and connect the existing professionals here in alberta as well as the local communities here in alberta sort of with the same mandates and goals and aspirations specifically for isc to alberta currently we have about 700 people on our membership list which is uh we're really proud of that um there's
certainly a lot more uh we've heard rumors from isc uh who is based out of florida by the way uh the united states is where they're based out of um that there are over 2 000 certified isc credential holders here in alberta so 700 is a big number there's a lot of people that we have access to and who come in and join and and chat with us often but it is a long ways from from the number of people that i believe are potentially out there um and so we're always looking to recruit and attract um all of those people and find interesting things that you know that we're currently doing that they wish to help
out in or or maybe they've got ideas of their own that they just need some extra you know manpower and and memberships or leadership to try to get that done so we're open to all ideas um isc 2 certification is not required to join to join our mailing list and our membership a lot of people don't quite get that but it's also because because we do promote certification and we do promote the continuing education of our members um you don't have to be a member to join in in fact we have a lot of members who are not currently uh we even have people who are on our board of directors who are not isc 2 certified
um so this is really open to everybody now once you're once you're in and we're communicating with you obviously we're certainly willing to help you out we run boot camps uh we run lessons uh we give courses we do all kinds of things that help promote certification but this is not required [Music] cpe points for this event and for those who are certified they know what cpe points are and sometimes they're hard to collect anytime we put on an event like this or help promote events like this cpe points are something that we are able to give out and to track um so while when you registered for this event there was an opportunity for you
to put in your ise membership number if you didn't do that or if you were unable to do that at the time it's not a loss we can still help you out with that we will be submitting all of these when we submit the besides edmonton and the besides calgary events for everybody that attended to get those cpe points or credits that's our email address there board um you may contact us at any time uh some of the other things other than the b-sides events that we're currently helping out with uh safe and secure online is a is a large program haima was on yesterday and had a great uh very long discussion about about safe and secure online and
all the various aspects of that if you're able to attend that that was really well done uh well done jaima if you're on and listening and just to give an overview of what that is it's it's a program developed by isc squared down uh the main body down in the united states uh who gives the materials and lends a hand to the chapters like ourselves to help deliver these programs and these programs are mostly geared as you can tell by the cartoons for a younger audience but they're for really anybody out in the community uh it really brings the level of information down to where it's it's a little bit more understandable for the the non-technical
people of the world trying to figure out you know how do i manage my passwords you know basic stuff like that um it and and how should i how should i deal with you know cyber bullying and and uh you know various other things online that are you know that are new really to everybody um as i said save insecure is run by the award-winning haima and our team uh both based in calgary and edmonton haima uh most recently won the james r wade service award from ise we're very proud of that out of all the chapters all around the world 140 000 members um that isc has um and and all of the the local chapters
there's there's almost there's almost a chapter for every province in canada and a lot of the states have multiple chapters uh haima won the award uh for 2020 um for her her service with isc's uh squared here in alberta so very proud of that thank you heima for for helping out of course is always looking for volunteers if you're interested in or learning to learn more about safe and secure online if you think there's an opportunity for you to participate in that or if you just want to learn more about it feel free to reach out to her the email address here is on the screen for those who attended and i hope everybody did b-sides edmonton
went off last month and harvinder and nakisha and a bunch of the other board members as well as their fantastic team up in edmonton uh really knocked it out of the park this year with this this would be the second year in a row that they had put b-sides edmonton as a virtual conference it had always been and it started out as an in-person conference held at nate and um transitioning over to a virtual conference certainly had its challenges but uh this would be the second year in a row that they've done it um personally i love the in-person conferences um our sponsors love the in-person conferences i think we get a lot more swag although
we do have got my box of uh b-sides edmonton stuff right here this was an amazing gift thank you guys for that um and the shirt uh so yeah so that and that uh keep your eyes open for that uh we'll be doing that again next year of course and of course you're all familiar with because we're here right now for besides calgary um very proud to be part of this uh james over at um bow valley i mean he's just done an amazing job starting this up it's it's so difficult to get these things off the ground this is now a multi-year event um being virtual again is very challenging i know he's got an entire team up there
uh helping out and helping me out with this my technical issues um so thank you again team for this
