well that was interesting touched it oh no I'm going to trip over this just just I'm announcing now that I'm going to trip over this so I going to wander around too that's going to make things interesting so um
yeah that's it folks thanks for coming great talk Jack outstanding so thank you my name is Jack this bar stool needs seat belts Daniel we're here to talk about life liberty and the pursuit of happiness for the English Majors that's you know that that's the medial s um or long s that's just me being silly um what are we talking about so we're going to talk about classic drinks bitters a little bit of Road Warrior survival tips um and I know I have a reputation for not not always being the happiest shiniest individual in the world but it turns out that even I believe it's okay for you to be happy at times just don't get carried away we don't
need any more Shiny Happy People but we can have a little bit of fun occasionally like when we hacker summer camp this week um and sometimes it's just to minimize the suffering and about that I am not an expert I am uh an amateur who enjoys what I do in many ways another one that has to be here is the disclaimer I am not naive about alcohol I drink too much um I don't drink so much that it creates problems for me I can quit for a month at a time if I want to give my poor liver a break and I do I do not drink to excess at home one of our challenges in past research on and
burnout has been alcohol and so indulge me in a moment of talking about that project one of the problems we have is we come here and drink ourselves silly um I go to Frankie's Tiki Room which we'll talk a little bit more about soon and um that's cool the thing is we don't know who in our community unless we're really close to him physically and socially uh gets falling down drunk uh when they're home you know the other 51 weeks of the year so don't take this too lightly but it's let's have some fun um and alcohol is one of those and in moderation it's cool uh binge drinking is a bad idea however hacker summer camp
so we're going to do it anyway so we'll talk about a little survival tips too so let's let's start with something even more basic though because here's what we're actually here to talk about right all right not quite we need to narrow our Focus we're here to tongue this is what we're here to talk about the tongue the tongue is an amazing organ you perverts I saw the smirk uh the tongue is an amazing organ um human flavor sensing is just stunningly complex and you know depending on your age so I guess that's me as the token old guy I won't point to anybody else who might you might have been told that there are five senses that we taste five
tastes that we can sense um and depending on your age you were told sweets sour salt and bitter and then the last one uh when I was young and the dinosaurs roam the Earth it was called Savory now we've borrowed the word Umami from the Japanese for that savory thing and that's U that's uh why MSG is in Foods because that actually lights that savory thing up and accelerates it uh you see tongue Maps you may have done this in school where they put different flavors on different parts of your tongue um if you look at a couple of them you find that uh they're not all the same because somebody did an experiment they got it well it turns out
we're all different right uh anybody taste the sacarin and get that nasty aftertaste or Stevia that's that's hereditary and it's different so take it the G yourself but there are different things that happen different parts of your tongue do are a little different but the idea is there are different pieces of u a flavor profile and what we're talking about is gaining a balance of flavor and where do you go with that well let's talk about how can you a lot of people that aren't into cocktails um don't want all the muddled flavors and whatever well that's that's because there are a lot of people who make bad cocktails um that's fine don't drink them if you
don't like them however a good cocktail may change your your outlook and you may find the ones that you like but the idea is balance so let's talk about like food I don't like complicated flavors I like really simple flavors when I cook I like to have something like a couple of turkey breasts there for Thanksgiving last year and that's the only preparation there is a little olive oil and some black pepper and sea salt however uh scientists tell us we can't tell the difference between one sea salt and another it's not physically possible however any one of you can go to the grocery store pick up two different packets of sea salt and you
taste the difference salt is an amazing amplifier of power uh of taste um but we can really get that so there's actually subtlety in there um again on this idea of taking good food and prepared simply I really like that idea but what that does is allows me to get the flavors which are pretty complex especially when you're cooking on hardwood charcoal with fresh bits of cherry that you just cut down a couple of a week before Thanksgiving so you'd have fresh cherry wood to grill it maybe that's not quite as simple a flavor profile as we're talking about we all have a spice rack for a reason little bit you know just a little bit to
wake it up throw a bay leaf in well we're adding those fa flavor compounds going to build up I have some standards that I U work with I use cumin a lot I was born and raised in Texas I use cumin a lot I use mild chili powders a lot it's good you know good blend is great my wife doesn't really like hot food I love hot food I have issues with it um no details are needed but you know a mix of like some garlic salt or um garlic powder there you go you got a and just so Burgers Hamburgers need some cumin and chili powder into that and a little garlic salt maybe or sea salt if
you don't like the garlic thing and you throw some uh dried good not the Cheapo dried onion flakes in that sucks up the magic juices also known as fat and then it sticks in there now we've got some extra flavor layers but it's just a hamburger what happens if we get into insanely complex flavors they don't all oh sorry that's a mole I'm talking about mle um now this picture wouldn't tell you that but I chose this cuz this is probably the best mle I have ever had and that's not what they're known for they're known for their soups this place is 5 miles away from us what you see is what you get if you
do not speak Spanish you'll probably wait for the most fluent English speaker to come to the county it is real Mexico City DF Cuisine inexpensive good stuff they're over um if you head out paradise to Eastern hang a left when you get to Sahara they're in little strip plaes as you can see there but mole is an amazing thing mle is one of those things that you know how can you put chili and cinnamon and cocoa and just layers and layers and layers of FL when you do it right it's amazing but it's kind of hard so does that apply to alcohol does that apply to this well for Millennia people have brewed or fermented distilled a variety
of Beverages and they haven't all turned out well and so frequently for for example in Germany they uh do something I do in my backyard every year because of my wife's herb garden take the wine that's kind of fresh and a little young and a little uh got a little attitude and maybe isn't the best stuff and it's probably low enough in alcohol you're not going to keep it for a few years and you grab some fresh sweet wood roof and maybe some fruit if you've got some throw it in there and now we've added a flavor profile to a wine that was and now it's becomes great I'm not talking about making sangria I'm taking a fresh
herb and just adding a little extra layer in there that balances so the Woodruff has a sweet Edge but it's also Woody and got a little bit of Zing to it and so the strawberry offsets that so it turns out that that applies to more things so we're going to talk about bitters bits as most people know start out as an herbal medicine snake oils um some of them actually did you some good uh one of the things that they did we'll talk a couple of things we'll talk they made some promises that weren't necessarily great uh bits uh we'll discuss why you wouldn't really take bitters for your liver now one of the things about those
the ones that stuck around are U the digestives um class of bits not sometimes used as flavoring agents but they're really something that you take and there is one that's readily available now it's called underberg um it is a punch in your mouth it has an Anis or licorice flavor that will really really wind you up and then um after you recover from the shock it kind of goes away and the next thing you know maybe maybe you'll be able to uh go out with your buddies after all you know that overly large meal that Vegas meal that you've had that's um that's actually something that uh happens it is it is an experience uh it's a it's
pretty interesting experience if you've never tried it before because this this week is hacker summer camp if anybody ate a little too much for lunch um you're you're welcome to come up and try one if you're brave enough or if you see me around I'll keep them in my pocket I do have a request if you grab one from me please do uh give me the bottle back with the cap because if you save the Caps they give you cool stuff they have like the drunkard's belt as I call it which is a leather belt with Bandelier type belt for for the bottles for putting the bottles in and uh it's a little one you take it all
in one shot you could use it as flavoring agent you would regret
it wait got to get that picture best demonstration all confence that I'll try one Jack yes I'll try one outstanding yes can you pose for picture again I had a little too much to eat so the the uh the licorice flavor really is ridiculously
strong don't be shy I got about 25 here so bu man like only if you have right up step right up and get you Jack Daniel P let's see how many we
can yeah
yes absolutely so maybe I should have gotten the 60 pack who would have thought that people two days into a week in Vegas would have already been in need of a digest you it is it is a pretty powerful stuff um it actually does it actually uh recover pretty quickly um I think the worst thing about him is the bottleneck is so small you just have to suffer and I think that's intentional because underberg that sounds German and they like people to suffer you're not living if you're not suffering through the fun so uh there we go can you posee for us with Bott the I missed the action shot I was trying thank you just for posterity sake
Pro brilliant I'll make sure you get a copy so this is what bitter started life as this is the most commonly available of the digestives still one of the interesting compounds that's in there that's in a lot of bitters is that look this science right this is science learning that right there this is gentiana Lua gentian root is normally what is used for this the root is used but gentian is a plant that has just full of bitter glycosites science doesn't really matter what they are um Amo jenton and gento Puris but these are really common so they're in there and they actually do kind of they do something they're not they're not going to make your liver better they do
something so let's talk about modern um yeah just thr let's talk about what we all know about bitters yeah so if you uh have ever seen bids you've seen things look I had props we've all seen these interesting thing about this uh this is like a trademark now I don't think they've actually trademarked it I think they encourage bogus stories about why the label doesn't fit properly uh they were in Venezuela and now they're in Trinidad and Tobago I my guess is they're just on island time and uh you know somebody ordered bottles somebody ordered labels they didn't talk to each other and it became and you know they made a big order of both and it
sort of became the trademark thing it's identifiable uh but there's uh that this is the one we know this is everywhere this is behind every bar that you go to if they don't have at least a bottle of this behind the bar you know stick with a PBR and make him open the can in front of you yeah
one thing worth noting about this is that bitters are
non-alcoholic bitters are non-alcoholic that's a almost 90 Proof nonalcoholic they're a food additive like vanilla extract and other extracts so they're categorized as food depending on where you live you may find that you can't get bitters at your liquor store depending on regulations I think it's The Bitter End that just split their business up they had Liquors as well as biders and they split the company into two because they had a continuous Battle of people that they sold the food distributors liquor stores and not always the same um so it is food addtive you may find that you can get an assortment of bits uh in some places I can get angur and another version of this at my
local grocery store which sucks so if you have a good one you might be able to get a little bit more but this is the standard some people frown on this because it is common it is common because this has survived over a century it's pretty good stuff it's not the only thing in the world though so some years ago oh that's a closeup of the bottle jack you should wash that bottle off that's unsanitary yeah no this stuff stains like you wouldn't believe um be aware of that in the Gan cuz we've got a lot of alcohol we've got all sorts of interesting agents it stains like mad you can you can make other people in your household unhappy
with you when you spill it I've heard that if you're the tall one of the pair so you always keep the bids on top of the refrigerator and don't pay attention to how close to the edge of the door and when my wife I mean when somebody opens the door and a bottle of bits this size explodes on the kitchen floor She I mean someone might get unhappy um Bob's wife Bob's wife Bob's wife so let's get into advanced bits let's talk about that so we have the basic one and it's good for all sorts of you can make a solid oldfashioned a lot of basic drinks with that and some not so basic on angor many a couple decades ago maybe
not quite two decades ago introduced or reintroduced and orange bitters this you can find uh at Big supermarkets you should be able anybody that's carrying bitters will probably have both you'll probably only get a small bottle that's all right um any of the Citrus bids are it's the power of citrus oil bittering agents and alcohol be very sparing with this stuff this is firy so let's talk about more bitters you know the foundation don't go crazy you don't have to be an idiot and go on Amazon and spend a lot of money but you know if you were going to you'd you know maybe go to the grocery store and get yourself some orange bits
and maybe uh maybe from the south maybe from New Orleans maybe you've been to New Orleans and uh you're fond of sazar um not to be confused with sazar r szar that is an ingredient of the na the you know national drink of New Orleans uh P's bitters bright pink it's milder bitters than angur um and it's what gives this azarak that bright pink color and it's got a different flavor it's a very different animal a little milder a little sweeter but it is um only 70 proof only but nonalcoholic right it's only 70 proof um then what happens I don't know you get crazy so maybe you make your own we'll talk about that in a minute but if perhaps you're
looking for an excuse to expand your bidder collection and you know that hacker summer Camp's coming up and you're not going to have time to make enough to share you might go on Amazon and order the 12pack from Fe Brothers you'll know these haven't been opened I'm here till Tuesday night next week we're friends there liquor stores just saying so there's some weird stuff in here rhubarb bitters let's go through them Peach bits you know what maybe we're not talking just hard liquor Peach bitters that could wake up a sangria that wasn't quite doing it for you what else we got orange bitters they're orange bids West Indian orange a little uh little edgy here I think
celery bitters wow celery bitters just a dash of that and a bloody mary might wake that up huh mint bitters mint bitters there's another scary one mint mint and alcohol forget mace that stuff will knock you cranberry bitters you know so you can so what what do you do with cranberries your keep Cotter you know you put a little zing in them so anyway there are a bunch of different things that are readily available let's talking about weird stuff Aztec chocolate bitters that's that's kind interesting what would you that's that's something you could only stand up against a decent tequila um they have one specifically for old Fashions grapefruit yeah but I mean these are just right on Cherry
trying to remember what the last one was black black walnut there's an interesting one black walnut's one that would probably stand up pretty well to a to a good bourbon aride you think and then if we go even further thank God some people's wives don't see how much they spend on Amazon a dinner um as if that chocolate wasn't enough we're back to my friend mole think about a mole Bitters and a rum with a little body or a tequila with a bit of body that's some crazy stuff if anyone's interested um after this I do have to run to the the mentorship track but you know maybe tomorrow we'll sit around with glasses of water put little drop or two in if
you don't want to taste we can we can play so that one so they're readily available
um what is that always true no there's a bitters explosion going on um right now in your mouth Yes actually uh as those of you who tried the underberg know it's not quite gone yet um uh and I'm washing it down with something brown and strong so making bitters let's talk about this I have some bitters that I would like to share with you however after two attempts at getting uh the Angelica route shipped to me where it seems to get intercepted because there's probably a really stupid drug sniffing dog at a postal facility near the place I order my bidder supplies um because two shipments now have been lost um I don't have any to
share but making bids can be pretty simple or extremely complex at its simplest you take a handful of herbs spices and sweeteners because yes there actually is sugar in that you just don't know it under the alcohol um and you uh put them on alcohol you know and it's one of those where don't use the the rot gut vodka don't use rot gut the gin or whatever you're you're using but don't go crazy I mean you know if it has words like 18 or 23 year on the bottle I wouldn't be making bitters of it if the label is white and has the word booze on it you probably gone too far the other end
um somewhere in between you know uh but basically you're making an an herbal infusion but you're using an alcohol you're adding a sweetener and some of them are very simple some of them are very complicated there are a lot of flavoring agents you can make simply um if you want something that uh will really clear the sinuses and you have mint growing out of control in your yard uh Jam mint into a small bottle and top it off with vodka and as I said it doesn't take much of that to wake up iced tea I mean it's not enough you will never put enough of that in to get a buzz out of but your iced tea will clear
your sinuses and wake you right up that's that's as simple as it gets there are books on making lur where you basically make a simple syrup and you'll need a simple syrup for making most bitters simple syrup is just equal parts sugar and water making the microwave really easy yeah um some people like Brad Thomas uh Parsons who is sort of the guru of this these days recommend a stronger syrup where you do two parts sugar and one part water um the sugars you use may make a difference depending on how powerful your bits are or they may not uh one thing that does make a difference is if you boil the crap out of it you
will get a bur taste if you're boiling crap out of something that's going to be um just ridiculously strong fine uh because nobody's going to know if you're trying to go for a little more subtle flavor no so we'll talk about this again in a minute but there's a gentleman named Mike Richardson Mike is bartender at Frankie's Tiki room um so speaking of drinking too much I there are three bartenders at Frankie's Tiki Room which is over by UMC University Medical Center Char West Charleston there are three bartenders at a bar here in Las Vegas who greet me by name I live 3,000 miles from here by the way I may spend some time in
Las Vegas I went to my barber to get a haircut my barber here on Spring Mountain Road I went into rent the tux and my buddy over at Jerry's tux said hey we got this killer sale on these tuxes so I bought one U and then we went to Y talk you know so I kind of know this city um but Mike back to the point that was pretty fast for me to get back to a point Mike makes bitters he is doesn't it doesn't make a big deal some people get really carried away and obnoxious about it right it's like people in our industry that get carried away and obnoxious about whatever it is they're
excited about that's really cool shut up about DS oh um I love you Dan [Laughter] um um no I do but you you know what I mean some people get a little obsessed it's all right to get obsessed but he's not obsessed he's like yeah you know I I I tend to blend my bits what do you mean well you know you throw some wormwood in and the wormwood's going to reach maturation in there and it's going to saturate then it's going to start to deteriorate uh at a faster rate than something like Star Anis so he doesn't think he takes it too far but he does individual component Blends so that you don't make this mush the mush is okay
really it's okay play with it um if you really get crazy if you're one of the best bartenders in world uh maybe you can be as crazy with Mike um but it's just a little science don't people put off by it what's a cocktail and where do we find good ones so there are a couple places couple of references uh that point to some early articles that specify a a cocktail includes liquor sugar Bitters and water this is a century plus old definition let's relax that a little bit make it a little bit more practical so liquor in order of importance uh we can stop here um yeah that actually works all the way down it so sweetener let's expand on
sweetener uh ginger beer if you're making a dark and stormy ginger beer includes both the water component and the sugar component and a little bit of bittering agent simple syrup complex syrups the sugar so something like absin where you or a traditional oldfashioned where you pour the bitters on a ice cube I me a sugar cube and and mash it um Agave maple syrup Maple requires some things a little stronger to stand up to personally my namesake Jack Daniels stands up extremely well with maple syrup a lot of places make maple syrup oldfashioned Maple old Fashions they tend to use Maker's Mark and Grade A maple syrup there are times when you don't want that stuff this is one of them um
you want a simple drink take grade bead dark the stuff that you have to look around for and has a bunch of dust on it because people don't understand the value of using it and baking and other things Grade B dark and Jack Daniels ice or water to your taste uh and there's that because you can actually pick up the maple that it is filtered from and they play off each other is it darker because it's stronger it's like less it's less pure it's got more sugars and uh stuff in it has more flavor it's got a more I don't want to say burnt but it's got a it's got a deeper taste it's not
something most people would like on pan make a honey based syrup yeah absolutely absolutely whatever you like so I mean the honey base so Jack Daniels started their couple other honey bourbon or honey whiskies out there now fruit juices mixes bitters are bittering agents um Citrus is great for bringing Zin to things some other herbs are uh water you know ice counts as water um soft drinks whatever so let's play Mad Scientist here's one of the things there are no recipes in this talk why not Jack well because actually it turns out there there may be a sequel to this talk where we talk about some recipes but this talk is about an introduction to it and I
don't want to put any specific recipes down because here's the deal when you go home you're not going to have cranberry Bitters and three kinds of Jin and liquor sweetener bitters think about whether or not they might work together experiment if it takes you two or three or seven tries to get it right it's okay as as long as you're not driving um exactly my car um play with it you know that's fine that applies to making beers too it's okay to screw up if it tastes really nasty don't drink it um but think about it first you might you might find some interesting things you can do uh I got to talk about this for a
minute non-alcoholic oh my God so this is non-alcoholic within the it's only 90 Proof uh but non-alcoholic drinks uh traditionally Bitters and soda is a really common one uh people take that to take your anger store and a little soda if you are ever going into a restaurant and you see somebody come out of the kitchen go behind the bar or ask the bartender and they've got their like Big Gulp and they put a little bit of ice in it and they've got the sprayer and they're spraying ginger alen while doing this with the bitters have a drink go somewhere else because somebody in the kitchen is really sick that came into work anyway probably puking ill do you want to eat
there uh but if it happens to be you Bitters and ginger ale is fantastic that Sugar help if it's not too sweet may may add some water to it Ginger Beer Works better actually it has more ginger in it which is naturally right the ginger ginger does unless you've ever gone sailing and tried to use ginger to calm your stomach and fit dishes for yours um designated driver drinks uh juices and soft drinks plus bitters makes it less of a pathetic drink if you really want if you want to feel like you're drinking but you aren't I love cuz I did this on a deer and it turned out to be phenomenal Chacha to taste Ginger plus
Chacha ginger beer might work well who serves these magical elixers almost everyone if it has words like juke joint on the front they might make a decent oldfashioned but probably not if however their signature drink is called ass juice and they serve it in a toilet such as double down right down on the road a mile away fantastic Punk bar I'm not sure I'd give them a lot although they do a bacon Martini that'll make you regret liking bacon Hotel Bars generally suck but not always every now and then you find an old school one the dun Hill and Charlotte's got a bar about the size of that table and it's worth lying enough to get to let me
tell you so who does it well we're in Las Vegas this is a place K herbs and Ry it's a squat block building way the hell out on Sahara it doesn't look like much prohibition themed you know red velvet everywhere gangster movies on the TV all the time it's a steakhouse cheapest steak two years ago was a $48 petique fillet if you go during the week during half the hour they have half pric steaks but they don't discount their drinks their drinks are classic cocktails Through The Years broken up by the decade that the drink became popular it is not inexpensive even though it is is way off the
strip Frankie's Tiki room is simply amazing they serve you things like this but it really has layers of flavor that you get to have you been to Smuggler cve in San Francisco I have not next time you're there you need to so you go there and you find something that's promising and you order drink off the menu cuz first of all order drinks like you know what you're doing if you have a specific beer if you ask for the beer list don't say what do you got um you trust your bartender if you think they're good they'll make you something interesting oh detour this is going to be quick because we're running out of time but let's talk about ice for
a minute this is um often your best friend in the hotel you know why that is cuz the hotel is fed Municipal Water which sucks but there's thing over there on the side if it's a decent hotel what the hell is it oh my God that's a multi-stage filtration system the water that you get out of there if this is maintained actually gives you good cold water um if they're poorly maintained they're full of mold and they'll make you really regret doing it however it may not be any worse than the municipal L that ice if you have in your room when it melts this is amazing science when ice melts it turns into water um you can
drink that witchcraft so what I boiling yeah so actually we're going to talk about that next ice your sports drink so I'm a big fan of Gatorade as a preventative we'll get to that in a minute ice everything to cut down the amount of sugar you're sucking in unless you're trying to you know get even work um even the nasty coffee tastes better if you take that melted water if it looks safe so speak going to Boiling this is getting really off on a detour he boil your water don't take it out of the hot water tap on your house unless it's a fairly new house and even then it probably is going to taste
funky uh boil your water if you're using you're trying to make cool ice cubes like a really big block ice cubes for old-fashioneds or you've got your Darth Vader head U you know ice cube tray from Think Geek or whatever boil the water drives the oxygen out let it cool make the ice with that it's not going to be perfect perfect but it's going to be a lot clearer it's going to be distorted less you're going to have a aever before we leave the hotel room this is just generic stuff especially you've been drinking um so you you realize at 3: in the morning and you don't have to get up for 2 hours um and
you need to hydrate yourself uh a the biggest glass of water you can find just a little bit of sugar will keep it from coming back up if you can't do it and tea and I'm a coffee fiend but you'll notice I'm not talking about coffee cuz you need just enough C caffeine to uh minimize the headaches but if you try to do a heavy dose of caffeine when you're hung over your screwed hydration hydration hydration we're in the desert this makes this more important uh if you can handle you know especially preventative a Banana's got enough potassium water there we go we're in good shape really preventative sports drinks too much sugar but um that's a good option Frankies
there's a rebel gas station next door you stumble out of Frank you tell the bartender good night tip w have them call you a cab walk next to the rebels gas station get an armload of Gatorade uh drink one as you walk back to the cab drink one in the cab drink one on the way to your room and then you have one to sip overnight uh it's only a gallon of Gatorade um it'll guarantee you don't over sleep because your bladder is going to say hey dumbass get up and it makes life better because it's not just your head and stomach that want to kill you the bladder joins in and spreads the load out um recovery sports
drinks maybe watered down some juices watered down not too sugary not coffee or maybe just a little bit serious recovery here's the problem you need to know this in advance Pedialite is what we give the kids well it turns out just getting a little bit of pedite in you probably get enough salts in you that you can hold some water down uh the problem is that when you're at the I need pedite stage you're probably not going to be able to go out and get
it tomorrow morning when you guys are in trouble I will be prepared to make pedite mimosas for you Pineapple pedite mimosas quickly neat versus up this is a confusing one uh this is uh up neat is unchilled up or straight up although straight refers to a type of liquor um is usually chilled over ice and poured into Martini style glass so it is chilled um think of the effect is like vodka shots properly delivered vodka shots are shaken over ice poured out knocked back they go down dangerously smooth and make for some interesting explanations and editat of uh you I mean you know somebody's uh expense report I was talking about my favorite this is a complete detour now I was
talking about my favorite breakfast bourbon at um bsides Rhode Island in side conversation which is Blandon it's amazingly good breakfast bourbon I uh he I forgot to mention how I prefer my breakfast bourbon I prefer it with one or two ice cubes people you know on the Rocks is a different animal but one or two ice cubes a little bit of water actually accelerates the separation of some of the oils and flavors really wakes things up so I'm not trying to make a cold drink one or two ice cubes kind of slowly drizzles out chills it a little bit uh he asked I got an email from this gentleman who I will not name um has said here we go I I took your
advice am I doing it right no so what do we read so I haven't given you any recipes uh Kings Le amos's everyday drinking the current version is a compilation of his books when he got old his drinking caused some problems for him maybe he died happy maybe it was all right I mean I got to say some of the health nuts in our industry and you know who I mean I love you Chris Hoff but really you clearly have too much to live for brother [Laughter] um that's a good book one of the greatest tips here is if you're having a party quantity over quality now if you're doing a bourbon tasting or a
single malt tasting you go there but if you're just having a party get the midlevel stuff and don't run out right you'll find plenty of amusing ones tequila Mockingbird that's English Majors who don't loathe puns which is both of them um I expect you'll find this under the counter at Starbucks as they're working on the Great American novel but anyway there are all sorts of things the book in the middle is highly recommended the most recommended book here is not here some dumb ass forgot to throw in his backpack um the bidder's book though is Brad Thomas Parsons He has really documented this explosion re explosion bits it's actually two pamphlets in a small book one pamphlet
is a history of bids and Cocktails the second pamphlet is how to make your own bitters with recipes guides and tips and tricks and then the small the smallish book is a bunch of notes and classic recipes great book Frankie Tiki room if I mentioned I like that place they have a book out now 77 of their drinks you will not think about Tiki drinks the same way when you see how much effort goes into the drinks that they make it Frankies it's phenomenal I've only been there the past three nights but then and I've only been in Vegas three nights with that we are out of time um Shameless self-promotion some of you know that I occasionally get pissed
about something and rant on my blog about information security um I'm on paul.com podcast where we occasionally always drink a lot um then I am sober for the work podcast uh on Twitter but this is the one that um gets updated even less frequently than my other one uh however when I find interesting places I often write about them there and so you will find commentary about Frankies there's a commentary since we have half a second left or something right um place called Firefly a topest bar down the street the topest sangria phenomenal Place 300 people got sick from food poisoning a couple of months ago they um they shut down they inspected it they
got all sorts of violations they moved two doors down invited the health inspector to basically camp out and beat them with a stick if he did any if they did anything he didn't like have yet to go yeah half price pictures of sangria the reviews are really solid when they the past couple of years they've been a staple of mine so that's a I haven't updated that that's one that's on the blog in Vegas um herbs and Rye Frankie's Tiki uh great places to get classic drinks and not what you might think of as classic drinks there might be somebody sitting in the front row with a camera who can tell you they can do
surprising Tiki drinks with Scotch single one um and with that ladies and gentlemen I I'll I'm going to run down to uh the new speaker track uh and uh I'll be around and I'll probably leave that bag somewhere and so if Tomorrow People want to take a little splash of water and try some of these go for it or you know if you walked up with a uh a glass that maybe had something in it we could thank
you let's see who's really screwed up tomorrow this is trying this would be an exercise in for so where are we all going tonight um Frankie I will end up at Frankie later I've got a couple of commitments earlier uh Frankies is not very large don't go there expecting food they have no food whatsoever um no food at all not even a Twinkie oh wait those don't exist anymore oh that's right they're back that's really unfortunate um you got a truck full and with that I'm going to pack up and get out of the way
