BSides DC 2019 - Welcome

besides DC would like to thank all of our sponsors and a special thank you to all of our speakers volunteers and organizers okay welcome to b-sides DC 2019 I'm gonna do a little bit of housekeeping if you could please silence anything that goes ping that includes people please as usual respect the speakers the organizers the volunteers and your fellow participants adhere to our principles and participate for those of you that don't know me I am Dorian Norman you would have seen my husband Alex up here in previous years he is in New Mexico this year on work so he won't be joining us today but we wanted to just invite you and tell you to have a

good time enjoy the event who's who this hasn't changed so if you have any questions you need staff you look for the orange badges and the yellow badges they are all in these lovely blue tie-dye t-shirts that you see running around so if you need somebody go ahead and flag one of those folks down for me speakers are white sponsors are green please thank them this is how we put this together for you is all that sponsor support and of course we couldn't do this without you guys the attendees so thank you for coming and participating that's really important to us so as in previous years we have more escape rooms this is our fourth year

here at the Renaissance and our fifth year of crypt kids of course seventh year of the conference I'm going to give you a quick tour we've got the IOT village back they'll be in congressional a we've also got in the IOT village tool or locks port also in congressional a they split that space for us year after year our F hacker sanctuary you all might know them as the wireless village they've recently become a 501 C 3 and they've upgraded their name they're located in congressional Hall B they start at 10:00 today please follow their instructions watch their leaderboard and hack their stuff not ours also don't hack the hotel or surrounding areas we respectfully request you leave the other

folks alone and if we do catch you you will be asked to stop and if you don't comply you will be asked to leave we've had to do that in the past kids will also commence at ten located in congressional Hall C they've got a bit of everything so we really love what Jenny and her team have done and they keep bringing new things year after year there's a couple new fun things this year for folks so if you have kids and you've brought them please check them out you do need a badge to get into that we limit that class space due to fire regulations so you know badges may become available later but I can't

eight pm there are drink tickets DC beers and it's sponsored by Vera's technology this year now this is the iron horses very last event ever they are shutting down and becoming I believe I heard a beach bar so please thank them for supporting us for the last seven years they've been great to work with they've been a fabulous partner thanks them take care of them we are working on Plan B for next year we don't have anything put together yet but we will announce that stuff once we get it figured out also tonight in oops that's wrong that congressional si grand North we're gonna have our cookies in milk and game party that's the family-friendly party so if

you have kids you want to come and play games you want to come in your PJs you know more power to you we're going to start right around 7:30 and go until everybody crashes so come join us for that as well the team so there are a number of folks in this room and well outside this room because they're working but this is the board the first few names our board members for our we're working on becoming a 501 C 3 so myself Jenny Jim Gilson Joe and venema Nathaniel Davis are all the board members we voted earlier this year and put them in place everybody else up here runs something or does something for us

that is hugely important and we could not do this without them

[Applause] I'm gonna do a little shout out to Alex because I know he's not here but without him this year helping me get set up with busy comp the tickets that kind of stuff you guys wouldn't have the website and everything that you have to get in he helped teach me the system showed me the ropes kind of set that all up for me and helped me get all of that out all well being on travel most of the year and doing everything else for our four-and-a-half five year old so and then we want to thank Jack without jack none of B sides would exist so thank you sir

and now keynote so you might have noticed we didn't announce who our keynote was we kind of kept it to ourselves made it a little bit of a surprise everybody knows him most of you know him anyway I'm pretty sure most of you have heard him he has frequently spoke at some other conferences I know you've heard him speak he's a long-standing member of the community he's a good friend and I think you guys need to hear some of the things he has to say today so I'm gonna step away I'm gonna let that individual come up and take care of introducing himself to you through his talk and then we'll let you kind of go from there but he'll

have somewhat great information I think everybody needs to hear so
