BSides Lisbon 2017 Interview with Bruno Morisson by Vítor Domingos

hi welcome to besides Lisbon the edition 2017 edition I'm here with Brune Morrison Bruno to talk a bit about besides well this year's edition of besides Elizabeth well the situation is a bit different than the previous ones so this is a force we started in 2013 so me and Thiago bargain have the idea of having a besides here in Lisbon so it has been growing growing and this year it's a day and a half because you also wanted to have a specific track for the CTF which is running today in one of the rooms so that's that's the main difference also we were able to create something that it's so what we call the beer sites the Lisbon which is based on

an idea by the guys from Manchester from besides Manchester they did a beer sites there and it's not the idea was cool so after the talks today and the CTF was just hang out exactly here where we are speaking there's a bar though the beer and enlightening talks and food and so on so that people can so be food in hacks so everything everything in place in place for a nice CNN and amazing weather also it is so we are in Lisbon we are at Microsoft headquarters here in Lisbon um you just mentioned this is the fourth edition you have a listen so can you just do a quick roundup of what happened in the previous three years

what's gonna be this year so you mentioned that please we're gonna have the besides a Lisbon but also what do you kind of are looking for for the next year for the next year's Oh honestly what we take a great account into what people the feedback people give us so just in the opening session I said it and I'm going to say throughout the event that people need to give us a service it's really important so one of the things those people people wanted they really enjoyed our CTF which was running like during the conference that people could just join it and do the CTF and people wanted well I can see the thoughts because I'm doing the CTF and

so on so that one and the fact that people say that way well we wanted a more time not just one day how about today so we're trying this year we're trying like slowly one day and a half having a CTF on its own on its own track so this is basically the main difference for the next year we'll see the how things are really see how people react and the feedback they give us so I don't know maybe today's full today so the feedback is rather important for you guys to also try to figure out would work what didn't work and the next time okay so what's the main goal of the b-sides right so for people out there

they've actually don't know what the b-sides event is yeah can you just describe what these quickly basically the besides events started besides Las Vegas in 2011 I think 11 I think in the second and they started exactly besides like you know in the old days there were the LPS and there were a size and the b-sides which are the songs they didn't get into the DI side so basically they starts at this besides conference doing blackhat briefings and DEF CON and they did the resize so a lot of talks that were not accepted to those conference but still we're very good and should be presented to to to the community and and that started to grow throughout other

countries and other cities and and basically that that's main idea to have a place for usually local communities to create those conferences of course we also have people from from other countries although basically in our in our case from from Europe and so I just can't have a community gathering where people can not only see talks but also hang out in and I know each other okay um you mentioned that Vito you're gonna show on this besides and this edition you're gonna have people from all over Europe over in from even from countries outside of Europe we have a lot of watch with people as speakers here they're gonna use English as main language so

I'm guessing that one of the Paul one of the goals is try to improve also the local Portuguese community out there and push that but for the so imagine me as a as a non security people as a guy that actually doesn't deny Siena I think about security she I come to this event what can I learn from here is it gonna be useful for me I think you to see thing people around I think it's it's it's usually a bit tacky in our case I think it's besides it's a bit it's something but our is a bit taxi because the main organisers are and tacky so we like the bits and bytes and stuff but I think there's there's a

lot for everyone we even have workshop since last year we have usually three workshops and it will be this year again which you can and you have different things one is like threat managing a threat management platform depth that you can use and you'll learn how to use it another one for a little bit of basics of whether web application security testing another one about malware analysis so there's a bit for everyone and even the talks are all types of of knowledge so I think there's unless you don't work in IT of course that you won't get anything out of theory except having fun perhaps and everything few drinks and few apps but if you work in

IT and you have the slightest interest in security I think it's there's a bit for you gonna go alright okay so just to wrap up this is gonna be the first half so sorry this is not today's he's wondering how the first half of the event when thought of live in Texas is gonna be tomorrow so we're just gonna start what we gonna do a wrap up tomorrow after the event to just get along just to see what was the general feedback of the event and what what do we expect for the next edition so anything else that you want to tell people people about besides rather than just enjoy the weather and enjoy the

weather enjoy besides just come over hang out and let's have some years later on and accent and the one thing what's what's with the within yeah right I want to speak about this tomorrow at the opening session I'll do a small spoiler so the idea I'm not even sure when when this came up but we saw this is this and thought it'd be really cool to have a floppy disk as as a badge because let's here we have a small device that had Wi-Fi answer was yes hey you wanted to do something are you a chance to have a computer to put these basically that's the challenge is to read one the additional work then at least they

were sold as non-working which not be true I don't know I have no idea but the main the mainly the thing and the the real reason at least on my part that I thought it was a great idea is because there's a lot of people that had never seen something like this because we were a bit well a little like one or two years older than a lot of other people in there but people that were born in the 80s and the 90s I never saw this I never use it I did a real piece I'd catch it next year as a badge yeah it would be fun we didn't find actually it was one of the

ideas but I didn't find enough to buy and to use so we need to get those accept tips from the spectrum times yeah good fun yeah I have a few at Hey and it's each one of these badges they all have labels so they have fun stuff so which each badge is unique so it's also setting edges all right okay excellent thanks very much regulator Cheers
